How much should I charge for a custom cake?

Most home bakers charge roughly what the ingredients cost plus a bit, and then wonder why the business never feels worth it. Here is the honest calculation.

Add up four things.

  1. Materials — everything that goes into or onto the cake. Flour, butter, fondant, the board, the box, the ribbon.
  2. Your time — this is the one people skip. Count decorating, baking, shopping, messaging the client and cleaning up. Pick an hourly rate you would accept from an employer and pay yourself it. Five hours at $25 is $125, and pretending otherwise does not make the cake cheaper — it just means you paid for it.
  3. Overhead — power, delivery, packaging, a share of your equipment.
  4. Profit on top — the business needs to earn something beyond your wages, or it is a job with extra admin.

A worked example: $38 materials, five hours at $25 is $125, $12 delivery and packaging. That is $175 before profit. At a 30% margin the cake is $250.

If that number feels frightening, the problem is usually not the price. It is that you have been undercharging, and correcting it always feels wrong at first.

Two things that help.

  1. Quote three options — simple, signature, showstopper — so the client chooses between them rather than choosing whether to buy.
  2. Never negotiate on the phone. Decide in advance what you would remove to reach a lower number, then offer that instead of a discount.
